Maintenance Specialist


Job description

Job purpose:

The role is responsible for preparing & maintaining the Research Station’s trial areas, in order that trials can be conducted according to the annual research program with an optimum organization to deliver key data defined by the business; ensuring the grounds of the research station are maintained at an optimum level.

The role will ensure the maintenance of machinery and other experimental site preparation / maintenance equipment, according to the maintenance timing.

Including management of EH&S (Environmental, Health & Safety) for the maintenance part of the research station.


  • To prepare & maintain research areas (field and glasshouse trials) at Levington research station in the UK, including soil cultivation and preparation, planting, sowing, potting, weeding, irrigation, maintaining lawn areas; applying knowledge of the requirements for the cultivation of a range of horticultural crops
  • Maintain the research station at the optimum state of readiness and implement a rolling weed control and horticultural cleanliness throughout the year with peak focus for key stakeholder events such as research field visit and customer tours
  • Adapt to specific techniques required for successfully implementing the Research program (e.g. establishing weeds in turf) & propose improvements for preparation / maintenance of sites for experimental purposes, as required
  • Planning & Organization: Organize the preparation of sites appropriate to the annual needs of the experimental program; planning the maintenance of experiments & equipment consistent with ensuring the integrity of the data being generated
  • Record details of site preparation and maintenance; including inventory lists of maintenance assets, maintenance records etc; vital to ensure the retention of the sites accreditation as an Officially Recognized Efficacy Testing Organization
  • Maintenance of machinery and experimental site preparation equipment: ensuring all operators maintain training records to prepare for use and subsequently use the range of tools / equipment on the Levington site
  • Support new employee on-boarding ensuring they can safely operate tools / machinery on site
  • Manage maintenance temporary staff on site during peak season: ensure the daily management of the maintenance temporary staff (and apprentice(s) when applicable) in order to be successfully motivated; delegate; coach (provide clear direction for self and others)
  • Manage EH&S (Environmental, Health & Safety) for continued operation of the research station. Responsible for ensuring that all work is carried out safely, in accordance with the Company’s Environment, Health and Safety policies and instructions. Actively participate to the quarterly EH&S meeting on site, and conduct at least one EH&S audit and report on site per year. Participate in the regular 5S days on site
  • Participate to the daily life of the research station: contribute to the daily meeting regarding planning and organization & planning maintenance tasks in the weekly agenda
  • Manage the work on site with external contractors: plan, organize and induct external contractors that work on site. Ensure new contractors are approved in line with Company policy and have the appropriate training records

About you:

  • BTEC level 4 or NDH equivalent in a biological discipline – Agronomy and/or Horticulture.
  • National Proficiency Testing Certificate, PA1, PA2, and PA6
  • Driving license
  • Forklift license
  • Tractors training
  • Experience in delivering a high quality product from a land based industry (Greenkeeping or farming)
  • Horticultural / a working knowledge of horticultural crops planning, land management and crop rotation
  • Pest, weed and disease identification
  • Knowledge of crop nutrition and disorders
  • Ability to prepare reports and recording
  • Have a working understanding of the principles of experimental design that affect the ways in which sites are prepared for experimental purposes
  • Organized and methodical, able to keep detailed and accurate records
  • Strong attention to detail
